Adobe InDesign is a great way of making amazing documents quickly and efficiently, whether those are destined for a printer, a printing press, a desktop screen, or a mobile device, like a tablet or phone.
Interactive PDFs can be made quickly and efficiently with Adobe InDesign . Interactive PDFs make great forms, magazines, presentations, prototypes, course workbooks and ebooks. They combine the security of the PDF format with the dynamic capabilities of the web—and they display equally well on desktops and mobile devices. Interactive PDFs contain links and bookmarks; buttons that play media, send email, and submit data; forms with intelligent fields; audio and video. Interactive PDFs also have page transitions and animation.
What is an interactive PDF?
In one sense, every PDF file is an interactive PDF because you interact with it while you are reading it. But, generally, the term interactive PDF is used for that PDF file that is meant to be viewed on screen, and includes interactive PDF features like buttons that let them navigate around the file or videos that explain the subject in detail, windows that open and close, hyperlinks, bookmarks, even check boxes and text entry fields.
What are Interactive PDFs used for?
Interactive PDFs are used for online publications designed to be read on screen. For example, online magazines or online workbooks for distance learning courses. Interactive PDFs can also be used for presentation slides because InDesign offers far more control over typography and page design than PowerPoint or Keynote. Interactive PDF can also be used for forms that someone can download and fill out, submitting the data right into a spreadsheet for you to analyse, and PDFs are of course great for books and documentation, but when you add some interactivity, you can turn a document into an experience that will draw your reader in and hold their attention longer, and, best of all, interactive PDFs are easy to make, easy to distribute, and easy to read on virtually any device.
Limitations of interactive PDFs
Because PDF is an amazing file format, but it has limitations. Not all PDFs look or behave the same everywhere. The best program to view a PDF is, Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader app. However, you also get other Programs that read PDF files but are not held at the same standard that Adobe is. So they cut corners. And the most common one is the Preview app on the Mac. And Preview is usually okay with print PDFs or basic PDFs, like pages with hyperlinks. But Interactive PDFs with buttons and movies and that kind of thing, well not so much. There are many interactivity features that are easy to make in InDesign are either not supported at all in PDF or they just don’t work like animation or slide shows. It is best to stick with the basics. The features that usually work, no matter what device you’re on are Hyperlinks, Bookmarks, and Form fields.
